The Victorian era (1837−1901) saw the first automobile, the invention of film, and communication with the telephone. Science, industry, art, population, and medical maladies exploded! The rapid progress caused a blurring of established, traditional medical procedures and an increase in alternative practices that centered on useless or dangerous remedies. Those trying to find relief from infectious diseases, digestive illnesses, blood disorders, and everyday aches were easy targets for quacks selling false cures.
