Sustainability

Actions for a Sustainable Future

All museums are about preservation, but the new Museum of Riverside has embraced sustainability in the building itself.  While we will not seek LEED® certification, we’ve made choices during architectural design to bring the building to a level comparable to LEED® Gold.

Our Approach

Reusing an older building is by itself a sustainable choice! On top of that foundation, we are prioritizing energy efficiency, smart controls, responsibly sourced materials, water conservation, and on-site energy generation.

Focus Areas

We are focusing on energy, water, materials, and a climate-appropriate landscaping chosen to align with Riverside’s climate conditions and long-term operations.

Rehabilitating an existing building saves materials and energy costs.

High-efficiency HVAC

Smart Controls

smart controls

Installing controls to take advantage of cool outdoor air when conditions permit, reducing mechanical cooling energy.

Photovoltaic Shade Structure

Building our roof terrace shade structure out of photovoltaic panels … in our sunny climate, it will generate about 15% of the building’s annual electricity demand.

Sustainably Sourced Materials
